How we compare European travel eSIMs

Plan prices, data allowances, validity, and features come from retailer feeds and are refreshed daily. Plans are sorted by lowest price by default, and you can sort or filter by data, trip length, coverage type, and provider. Each plan’s name shows how many countries it covers. Do you need a European travel eSIM?

Check your UK plan first. Many UK networks still include roaming in Europe at no extra cost, including O2, Tesco Mobile, Smarty, giffgaff, and iD Mobile, usually with a fair use data cap. EE and Three charge a daily fee for most customers, and Vodafone includes Europe on selected plans only. Our EU roaming guide compares every UK network.

A European travel eSIM is most useful if:

• your network charges a daily fee and your trip is long enough for the cost to add up
• you need more data than your plan's fair use cap allows
• your trip includes countries your UK network does not cover at its European rate, such as Turkey or some Balkan countries

If your UK plan includes Europe and the cap covers your trip, you may not need a travel eSIM.

Which countries do European plans cover?

The plans on this page come in these regional and global types:

• Airalo Europe (41 countries): for trips across Europe on one eSIM, including Turkey and the UK.
• Breeze EU+ (34 countries): European coverage including Turkey and the UK, with fixed-data and unlimited options.
• Breeze Europe Lite (33 countries): the EU plus Norway, Iceland, Switzerland, Moldova and some smaller states, with fixed-data and unlimited options. It does not include Turkey or the UK.
• KnowRoaming EU (49 countries): a wider European list that includes several countries outside the EU, such as Turkey, Serbia and Georgia.
• Land&Go Europe (38 countries): covers the main European holiday destinations, plus Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man.
• Land&Go Europe Extended (55 countries): adds countries outside the EU, including Turkey.
• Land&Go Scandinavia (8 countries): for trips around the Nordic and Baltic countries.
• Land&Go Channel Islands and Isle of Man: covers Jersey, Guernsey, and the Isle of Man.
• Global plans (178 or 201 countries): for trips that continue beyond Europe.

Country lists differ between providers. Check that every stop on your route appears in the plan’s country list before you buy.

How much data do you need for a European trip?

For a week-long city break, 3GB to 5GB is usually enough for maps, messaging, social media, and the odd video call. Multi-country trips use more, because you look up trains, routes, and accommodation as you go: allow 10GB for two weeks of Interrail, or 25GB or unlimited if you plan to stream, work remotely, or hotspot a laptop.

Check the validity as well as the data. The plans on this page last from 1 day to 6 months, so pick one that covers your whole trip. Plans marked "Top-ups available" on their tile allow top-ups. For other plans, check the provider's terms.

Coverage when you cross borders

A European eSIM connects to a partner network in each country it covers, and switches automatically when you cross a border. Expect a short drop in signal as it changes over, usually less than a minute. If your phone shows no service after crossing, switch airplane mode on and off, or choose a network manually in your settings.

Coverage in each country depends on the partner network the plan uses there. You can check which networks a plan uses in the plan details on the provider's site.

Using an eSIM on a cruise

A travel eSIM works when the ship is close enough to land to pick up a mobile signal, usually in port and along the coast. At sea, your phone may connect to the ship's own maritime network, which is not covered by travel eSIMs or by UK plans' European roaming, and can be very expensive. Turn off data roaming on your UK line, or use airplane mode with the ship's Wi-Fi, while you are at sea.

How to activate your European eSIM

Buy the plan and install the eSIM profile before you travel, while you are on reliable Wi-Fi, using the QR code or the provider app. Check when the plan's validity starts: most start when the eSIM first connects in Europe, but some start on install. Follow the provider's instructions on when to switch the line on.

After arriving, turn on the eSIM line, set it as your data line, and turn on data roaming for the eSIM line. Most travel eSIMs will not connect without it. Turn off data roaming on your UK line so your UK network does not charge you for data.

If there is no connection after a minute, switch airplane mode on and off once. You can keep your UK line on for calls and texts on your usual number, but calls and texts received abroad may still be charged by your UK network. Keep data roaming on for the eSIM line for your whole trip. The eSIM needs it to connect in each new country.
