How much data do you need for Turkey?
For a week in Istanbul or on the coast with maps, messaging, social media, and the odd video call, 3GB to 5GB is usually enough. Allow 10GB or more if you are touring between Istanbul, Cappadocia, and the coast, or plan to stream or hotspot a laptop.
WhatsApp is the main way hotels, transfer drivers, and tour operators keep in touch with guests, and taxi apps such as BiTaksi need data to book. If you are combining Turkey with Greece or elsewhere in Europe, several European plans on this page include Turkey, but not all of them do, so check the country list before you buy. Network coverage in Turkey
Turkey has three mobile networks: Turkcell, Vodafone Türkiye, and Türk Telekom. Travel eSIMs usually run on one or more of these. You can check which network a plan uses in the plan details on the provider's site.
Coverage is strong across Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, and the Aegean and Mediterranean resorts, including Antalya, Bodrum, Fethiye, and Marmaris. Signal can be weaker in rural eastern Turkey, in mountain areas, and in some valleys around Cappadocia.
Travel eSIM versus a local SIM in Turkey
Turkish SIMs are sold in Turkcell, Vodafone, and Türk Telekom stores, including at Istanbul Airport, and you need your passport to buy one.
Turkey also blocks phones from foreign countries that use a Turkish SIM for more than 120 days unless the phone is registered, for a fee, under the IMEI registration rules. Short trips are not affected, but for a long stay a travel eSIM avoids the issue, because it connects as a roaming service rather than a local SIM.
How to activate your eSIM in Turkey
Buy and install your eSIM before you travel. Since July 2025, Turkey has blocked access to the websites and apps of several international eSIM providers from inside the country. eSIMs installed before you arrive keep working, but you may not be able to buy a plan, install one, or top up once you are in Turkey. Choose a plan with enough data for your whole trip.
Buy the plan and install the eSIM profile before you travel, while you are on reliable Wi-Fi, using the QR code or the provider app. Check when the plan's validity starts: most start when the eSIM first connects in Turkey, but some start on install. Follow the provider's instructions on when to switch the line on.
After arriving, turn on the eSIM line, set it as your data line, and turn on data roaming for the eSIM line. Most travel eSIMs will not connect without it. Turn off data roaming on your UK line so your UK network does not charge you for data.
If there is no connection after a minute, switch airplane mode on and off once. You can keep your UK line on for calls and texts on your usual number, but calls and texts received abroad may still be charged by your UK network. Some travel eSIMs for Turkey need you to choose a network manually if the phone does not connect automatically. If you have no signal after switching airplane mode on and off, check the provider's app for the network to select.

Does my UK plan include roaming in Turkey?
It depends on your network. Turkey is not in the EU, and some UK networks charge more for it than for EU countries. Check your network's roaming page before you travel.
Do I get a Turkish phone number?
