How we compare travel eSIMs for Spain

Plan prices, data allowances, validity, and features come from retailer feeds and are refreshed daily. Plans are sorted by lowest price by default, and you can sort or filter by data, trip length, coverage type, and provider. We may earn a commission when you buy through our links, but this does not change the order plans appear in.

The guidance below was checked against provider terms in October 2026. You can compare other destinations on our travel eSIM hub.

Airalo charges in US dollars. We show an approximate price in pounds using a daily exchange rate, so the amount on your statement may differ slightly. Your card provider may also add a fee for paying in a foreign currency.

How much data do you need for Spain?

Most trips to Spain are city breaks or a week or two on the coast. For a week with maps, messaging, social media, and the odd video call, 3GB to 5GB is usually enough. Allow 10GB or more if you plan to stream, work remotely, or share a connection with a travel partner.

WhatsApp is widely used in Spain for restaurant bookings, tour operators, and holiday rentals, so you will want data on arrival to pick up messages from your host. If your trip also takes in Portugal or France, a European plan covers several countries on one eSIM: compare our European plans.

Spain is in the European roaming zone, and many UK networks still include roaming there at no extra cost, including O2, Tesco Mobile, Smarty, giffgaff, and iD Mobile, usually with a fair use data cap. EE and Three charge a daily fee for most customers, and Vodafone includes Europe on selected plans only. If your plan includes European roaming, you may not need a travel eSIM: check our EU roaming guide first.

Network coverage in Spain

Spain has four mobile networks: Movistar, Vodafone, MasOrange (which runs the Orange, Yoigo, and MásMóvil brands), and Digi. Travel eSIMs usually run on Movistar, Vodafone, or Orange. You can check which network a plan uses in the plan details on the provider's site.

Coverage is strong across Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Valencia, Málaga, the main tourist coasts, and the islands. Signal can be patchy in the rural interior and in mountain areas such as the Pyrenees, the Picos de Europa, and the Sierra Nevada.

Travel eSIM versus a local SIM in Spain

Prepaid SIMs are sold in operator stores, phone shops, and some tobacconists (estancos). Spanish law requires prepaid SIMs to be registered, so you will need your passport.

For most UK visitors, the choice in Spain is between your UK plan's roaming allowance and a travel eSIM, rather than a local SIM. A local SIM mainly makes sense for a long stay, such as a winter on the Costa del Sol.

How to activate your eSIM in Spain

Buy the plan and install the eSIM profile before you travel, while you are on reliable Wi-Fi, using the QR code or the provider app. Check when the plan's validity starts: most start when the eSIM first connects in Spain, but some start on install. Follow the provider's instructions on when to switch the line on.

After arriving, turn on the eSIM line, set it as your data line, and turn on data roaming for the eSIM line. Most travel eSIMs will not connect without it. Turn off data roaming on your UK line so your UK network does not charge you for data.

If there is no connection after a minute, switch airplane mode on and off once. You can keep your UK line on for calls and texts on your usual number, but calls and texts received abroad may still be charged by your UK network. If you are not sure your phone supports eSIM, check our eSIM compatibility guide before you buy.

If your UK plan includes European roaming and you are using a travel eSIM for extra data, set the eSIM as your data line and turn off data roaming on your UK line. Otherwise your phone may use your UK allowance and the eSIM's data at different times, which makes it harder to track what you have left.

Travel eSIM for Spain FAQ

Answers to common questions about using a travel eSIM in Spain.

Do I need a travel eSIM for Spain if my UK plan includes EU roaming?

Usually not. If your plan includes European roaming and its fair use cap covers your trip, your UK SIM will work in Spain at no extra cost. A travel eSIM is most useful if your network charges a daily fee or you need more data than your cap allows.

Will my eSIM work in the Canary Islands and the Balearics?

Usually, because both are part of Spain, but check the plan details on the provider's site before you buy. If you are only visiting the Canaries, this page also includes Canary Islands-only plans.

Can I use one eSIM for Spain and Portugal?

Yes, if you choose a European plan. Both countries are covered by most European travel eSIMs.

Will my eSIM work on the AVE high-speed train?

Mostly. Expect short drops in tunnels and on some rural stretches between cities.

Do I get a Spanish phone number?

Most travel eSIMs are data only and do not include a Spanish number. You can keep your UK line on for calls and texts, and use WhatsApp for messages and calls.
