What mobile data speeds actually mean
Mobile speeds are measured in megabits per second, written as Mbps. This is a measure of how much data your phone can move each second, not how much storage a file takes up. It is easy to confuse with megabytes (MB), which measure file size. There are eight bits in a byte, so a 10MB file takes about eight seconds to download at 10Mbps, not one second.
Two numbers matter for most people. Download speed is how quickly your phone pulls data in, which affects streaming, browsing and downloads. Upload speed is how quickly it sends data out, which affects video calls, posting photos and sending large files. Networks usually advertise download speed, because that is what most everyday activities rely on.
There is also latency, sometimes called ping, which is the delay before data starts moving. Latency is measured in milliseconds rather than Mbps. For activities like online gaming and video calls, low latency often matters more than a high top speed.

The easiest way to understand a speed figure is to translate it into the time it takes to do everyday tasks. The table below gives approximate download times at three common speeds. Real times vary with signal, congestion and the server you are downloading from, so treat these as a guide rather than a guarantee.
The pattern is clear. For small, everyday tasks like loading pages, streaming and downloading apps, even 10Mbps feels quick, and the difference between 50Mbps and 100Mbps is barely noticeable. Higher speeds mainly show their value on large downloads, where minutes turn into seconds.
Ofcom's Mobile Matters testing found that downloading a 2MB file, such as a photo or short clip, took about 0.3 seconds on 5G compared with about 0.7 seconds on 4G, based on data collected between October 2024 and March 2025. For most single tasks on a phone, both feel effectively instant.

Most people need far less speed than the headline numbers suggest, because a phone is usually running one or two things at once rather than a whole household. The figures below are the download speeds each activity typically needs to run smoothly on its own.
Browsing, social media, messaging and email need very little, generally under 5Mbps. Music streaming, even at the highest quality, uses under 1Mbps. Standard definition video needs around 2 to 3Mbps, and high definition (1080p) video streaming from services like Netflix and YouTube needs around 5Mbps. Ultra HD or 4K video needs far more, generally 15 to 25Mbps, though on a phone screen the difference between HD and 4K is often hard to see.
HD video calls need around 3 to 4Mbps in both directions, which is why upload speed matters here. Online gaming uses surprisingly little bandwidth, often around 3Mbps, but it is sensitive to latency, so a stable connection matters more than a high top speed. Tethering, where you share your phone's connection with a laptop or tablet, is the one case where higher speeds genuinely help, because you may be streaming, downloading and browsing across several devices at once.
For a single phone, this means a steady 10 to 30Mbps comfortably handles almost everything most people do, including HD streaming. Speeds beyond that are useful mainly for very large downloads, heavy tethering, or simply the reassurance of headroom in busy places.
What speeds do UK mobile networks really deliver?
In practice, modern UK 4G and 5G networks usually deliver far more than a single phone needs. Good 4G commonly provides enough speed for smooth HD streaming, while 5G routinely delivers speeds well into the tens or hundreds of Mbps where coverage is strong. Ofcom's Mobile Matters data reported 5G connection success rates of 96 to 98 per cent, and RootMetrics UK RootScore reporting continues to rank the main networks closely on speed and reliability.
The number on your screen is only part of the story. Real-world speed depends heavily on where you are, how strong your signal is, whether you are indoors, and how many other people are using the same mast. This is why you can have full signal bars and still see slow downloads or buffering in a packed railway station or at a festival. In those moments the network is congested, not broken, and it is exactly the situation that priority features are designed to improve.
Because of this, a very high advertised speed is not always the most useful thing to shop for. Consistent performance in the places you actually use your phone often matters more than a record top speed you will rarely reach.
Why some networks cap or guarantee speeds
UK networks increasingly treat speed as something to package and price, rather than giving every plan the same performance. This usually takes one of two forms.

A 100Mbps cap sounds restrictive, but as the tables above show, it is well beyond what a single phone needs for streaming and browsing. Caps like this are mainly felt when downloading very large files or heavily tethering multiple devices.
The second is a premium or guaranteed tier, where you pay more for priority and a minimum speed. The value here is less about raw top speed and more about consistency when the network is congested.
For most people, the practical takeaway is reassuring. Everyday tasks need modest speed, so a capped plan is often perfectly adequate. Paying more for higher or guaranteed speeds makes the most sense if you regularly use data in very busy places, tether often, or download large files on the move.

Compare the download figure with the activities above to see whether your speed is genuinely limiting you or simply lower than the headline number.
If speeds feel slow, a few things often help. Check whether you are actually on 5G rather than 4G, as coverage can vary street by street. Moving nearer a window or outdoors can improve a weak indoor signal, and restarting your phone or toggling airplane mode can force it to reconnect to a stronger cell. If your plan is capped and you regularly tether or download large files, a higher speed tier or a different network may be worth considering. If speeds are consistently poor where you live, coverage rather than plan choice is usually the real issue, and switching network can help more than paying for a faster tariff.
