What is a SIM Only deal?
A SIM Only deal is great if you already have an existing mobile phone but you are looking for a better deal!
Similar to a mobile phone contract a SIM Only deal gives you an inclusive amount of data, minutes and text messages but at a much cheaper rate! This is because the network will not be subsidising the cost of a mobile phone.
You can also transfer your current mobile number to your new network provider, you can read more about this here.

Why choose a SIM Only Deal?
There are various reasons to travel down the SIM only pathway. Cost savings are one of the most immediately noticeable benefits. Without the cost of a new phone bundled in, monthly fees are significantly lower. You’re paying for the SIM and the SIM alone – ideal if you already own a phone you’re happy with or prefer to buy a handset outright.
Additionally, SIM only contracts typically offer more flexible terms. These can range from one to twelve months, which is much better than traditional phone contracts that can tie you in for 24 months or more. This flexibility allows you switch plans or providers with greater ease, allowing you to better take advantage of deals or improved services as they become available.
Will there be any downtime when I switch my number to another network?
There is usually minimal downtime when switching your mobile number from one network to another. The process usually takes one working day, and the downtime is usually only a few minutes at the end of this time.
You can find more about switching your mobile number by reading our handy guide.
What can I do with my old SIM?
Once your old SIM card has been deactivated, you can destroy it as there is no value in a SIM card.
Be sure to cut the SIM card in half like you would like an old bank card. When cutting through the SIM card, be sure to cut through the gold foil. This will ensure that it is absolutely corrupted and no one can get access to the data on it. Then just put the pieces in the bin.
When does my SIM Only contract start?
Your new SIM only contract will start as soon as you receive the SIM card, or E-SIM if you have opted for one.
You can choose to use it straight away or wait until your number has been transferred over to start using your new SIM card.
Will I get a new phone with a SIM Only Deal?
No. A SIM only deal does not include a new phone. As the name suggests, it supplies you with just the SIM card, which comes with your chosen amount of data, texts, and minutes. This type of plan is perfect if you already own a phone you love and don’t wish to upgrade anytime soon.
By separating the cost of the handset from the mobile service, SIM only deals often offer better value for money. That’s not all. It also gives you the freedom to select a handset independently, opening the door to potentially better prices or deals elsewhere. Furthermore, this approach avoids the lengthy commitment and higher monthly costs associated with traditional mobile phone contracts.
Do I have to stick with my current network?
No. While you can choose to do so, there’s no requirement to stick with your current network when opting for a SIM only deal. Switching networks is straightforward. It’s also recommended, as it allows you to shop around for the best deals that suit your needs.
Most networks feature a simple process to transfer your existing phone number to a new network. This usually involves a porting authorisation code (PAC) gained from your current provider to ensure you keep your number if you wish.
The flexibility of switching network is one of the key advantages of SIM only deals. It enables you to take advantage of competitive rates, better coverage, and so on, all without being tied down to a long-term contract.
What contract lengths are there for SIM Only Deals?
SIM only deals offer a variety of contract lengths to suit different needs and preferences. One of the most common options is a 30-day rolling contract. This offers maximum flexibility, allowing you to change or cancel your plan with just a month’s notice. These are ideal if you want the freedom to shop around and switch plans frequently.
There are also longer-term contracts – think six or twelve months – which often come with better rates and additional perks. Although they tie you in for longer, these longer contracts are beneficial when you seek more stability and lower monthly costs.
The range of contract lengths means there is always a suitable option for you when picking a SIM only deal.
