Honest Mobile Smart SIM Review: I Tested It Across Three Countries

I had been using Honest Mobile's Smart SIM in the UK for eight months as a backup that kicked in whenever my main SIM dropped signal, and I wanted to see whether it would earn its place abroad too. So I took it on a Miami-based cruise that stopped in the British Virgin Islands and the Dominican Republic, and used it alongside my main UK SIM for the whole trip. This review is based on that first-hand use, not a spec sheet. It covers what the Smart SIM is, what it handles well, and where it falls short.

How I tested it

To put this review together, I ordered and used the Honest Mobile Smart SIM as a real customer and took it abroad to see how it performed in practice. I also cross-checked what I observed against Honest Mobile's published terms, supported-apps list, and supported-countries list, so anything I describe as a limitation is something I either hit myself or confirmed in their own documentation.

What Honest Mobile Smart SIM is

Honest Mobile's Smart SIM is a data-only eSIM that is designed to sit alongside your main SIM, not replace it. It is not a conventional travel SIM and it is not a full mobile data plan. It works in two ways that matter for travellers.

First, in the UK, it can connect to EE, O2, Three, or Vodafone, whichever has the strongest signal at your location. Second, when you travel, it gives you free roaming data in more than 180 countries, including the USA. The catch is that the data is not open. You can only use it with a whitelist of more than 500 approved apps, covering essentials like Google Maps, WhatsApp, Uber, Citymapper, and several UK banking apps. Anything outside that list, including open web browsing, social media, and video streaming, is blocked.

Pricing at the time of testing was £10 per month on a rolling monthly plan or £45 for the full year. There are no separate roaming fees to pay on top. You activate it once, and it is ready whenever you lose signal on your main SIM or cross a border. Because it is eSIM only, you do need a phone that supports eSIMs and dual-SIM operation.

Setting it up

Ordering the Smart SIM was a straightforward online purchase. Honest Mobile emails a QR code and step-by-step instructions, and the whole activation took me a few minutes from opening the email to seeing the Smart SIM listed in my phone's eSIM settings.

The one part that is worth spending time on is the data-switching configuration. The Smart SIM is most useful when it can take over automatically if your main SIM drops signal, so you need to enable automatic data switching in your phone's dual-SIM settings and set the Smart SIM as the fallback. I also labelled the two SIMs clearly in my phone so I could tell at a glance which one was active. If you use a VPN, you will need to turn it off while on the Smart SIM, as Honest Mobile does not currently support VPN traffic. That is worth knowing before you travel, because a lot of people run a VPN full-time on mobile and may not realise it is what is blocking the Smart SIM from connecting.

If you have not used an eSIM before, our guide to eSIMs and which UK networks support them covers the basics.

My experience using it across three countries

The headline is that the Smart SIM did the job I hoped it would do, which is keep my most-used apps working without me having to think about roaming costs or signal. Because I did not have a paid roaming add-on on my main UK SIM, the Smart SIM was doing the heavy lifting for data the entire trip, which turned a nice-to-have into something I actively depended on.

Google Maps was the most important test and it worked reliably throughout. In Miami I used it mostly for walking routes around the city, checking transit times, and finding places to eat. Loads were quick enough that I never found myself tapping impatiently, and I did not see any gaps where the app failed to update my position.

WhatsApp behaved exactly as it does at home. Messages, voice notes, photos, and WhatsApp voice calls all worked. For keeping in touch with family in the UK and coordinating with people on the trip, this alone made the Smart SIM worth having.

Uber was the third app I leaned on heavily in Miami. Booking rides, tracking the driver, and paying through the app all worked without issue.

The thing that tripped me up most was not a technical failure, it was my own habit. More than once I caught myself reaching for the browser to search for a restaurant or look up opening hours, and only realised halfway through typing that open web browsing was not on the Smart SIM. Google Maps handled most of those moments fine, once I remembered to use it as a discovery tool rather than just a navigation app, but I had to consciously retrain the reflex of "tap Chrome, type query" that I do without thinking at home. Anyone considering the Smart SIM for travel should expect a similar adjustment period in the first few days.

Banking worked for the core tasks I needed. The banking app loaded and let me check balances and authorise payments, which mattered while paying for things in an unfamiliar currency. The main caveat here is not specific to my trip: the Smart SIM cannot receive SMS, so if your bank sends one-time codes by text, those still need to arrive on your main SIM. App-based push notifications for two-factor authentication are fine.

At the port stops in the British Virgin Islands and the Dominican Republic the Smart SIM connected to local partner networks once we were on land. It is worth flagging that the Smart SIM does not work on maritime networks at sea, so once the ship was out of range of coastal masts I was offline, same as any other SIM that does not have a specific cruise package. On land at each port, the apps I used in Miami worked the same way.

Reliability overall was good. There were a handful of moments where the automatic switching did not kick in as quickly as I expected, and I found it faster to switch data manually when I knew I was about to need maps or a ride. Honest Mobile is transparent about the fact that usage is recorded in approximate chunks rather than exact figures, so I did not spend much time watching the usage counter.

What it cannot do

Being clear about the limitations is more useful than praising the positives, because the Smart SIM is a narrow tool and it will disappoint anyone who expects it to be a full travel data plan. Here is what I ran into, or verified in Honest Mobile's own documentation, during the trip.

You cannot browse the open web. If a friend sends a link to a news article on WhatsApp, tapping it will not load. You cannot stream video or music. Netflix, YouTube, Spotify streaming, and similar apps are not on the whitelist. You cannot use social media apps. Instagram, TikTok, and X are blocked. You cannot use a VPN on the Smart SIM connection. You cannot make standard voice calls or send SMS, and you cannot receive them on this SIM either. You cannot dial 999 or any other emergency number on the Smart SIM, because it is data-only. Emergency calls need to go through your main SIM or any available network. You cannot tether or use the Smart SIM as a mobile hotspot.

None of these are hidden. They are all stated in Honest Mobile's Smart SIM FAQs, and once you understand the product's purpose, they make sense. But if you have not read the small print, some of them will catch you out.

For anyone who needs open browsing, social, or streaming while abroad, a dedicated travel eSIM from a provider like Airalo or Saily will serve you better, or a main-SIM roaming add-on from your UK network. If international calling from the UK itself is your priority, our guide to the best networks for international calling covers the options in more detail.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Free roaming in 180+ countries with no daily fees or data cap on covered apps
  • Works in the USA and Caribbean destinations, which many budget UK roaming plans do not cover well
  • Covers the apps most travellers actually need: maps, messaging, ride-hailing, banking
  • Works as a genuine UK backup, not just a travel SIM, connecting to EE, O2, Three, or Vodafone when your main SIM has no signal
  • Annual plan at £45 per year works out at £3.75 per month, cheaper than most single-trip travel eSIMs
  • Installs as an eSIM in a few minutes, with clear setup instructions
  • Usage is unlimited on covered apps, so you do not ration your data

Cons

  • Data-only, so no calls, no SMS, no 999, no hotspot on this SIM
  • No open web browsing, no streaming, no social media
  • VPNs must be turned off for the Smart SIM to work
  • No connectivity on maritime networks at sea, only when on land within a supported country
  • Usage reporting is approximate, not exact
  • You need a phone that supports eSIM and dual SIM to use it at all
  • If you expect a full travel data plan, you will be frustrated

Who it is best for

The Smart SIM earns its place in two quite different situations, and after eight months of UK use plus a three-country trip, I think both are genuine.

The first is as a UK backup SIM for everyday signal gaps. Before I ever took it abroad, I had been running the Smart SIM in the UK for eight months. It sat quietly in the background and kicked in whenever my main SIM dropped signal, which happened more often than I had expected once I started paying attention. On trains, in older buildings, and in patches of town where my main network had gaps, the Smart SIM would quietly take over and the apps I needed would keep working. At £45 a year, that alone is worth the price for a lot of people, before travel is even in the picture.

The second is as a cheap travel backup for specific kinds of travellers. If you go abroad two or three times a year, mostly want maps, WhatsApp, and ride-hailing to work, and are happy to keep your main SIM active for calls, texts, and anything outside the whitelist, the Smart SIM is a genuinely practical option. The annual price is low enough that it does not need to earn its keep on every single trip.

It does not make sense for heavy data users abroad, for digital nomads who need a full working internet connection, for anyone whose bank relies on SMS-based one-time codes if they plan to leave their main SIM at home, or for anyone who prefers a single SIM setup. For those users, a proper travel eSIM or a generous UK plan with inclusive roaming will serve you better. Our guide to EU roaming and fees after Brexit sets out which UK networks currently include roaming as standard.

Verdict

Honest Mobile's Smart SIM is not trying to replace your main SIM, and judged against what it is actually designed to do, it held up well. Across eight months of UK use and a three-country cruise trip, maps, messaging, rides, and banking all worked when I needed them, and I never had to think about a roaming bill or buy a local SIM on arrival. The limitations are real, but they are clearly stated, and at £45 for the year, the price is low enough that it only has to earn its keep occasionally.

The one thing a potential buyer should sit with before clicking buy is the restriction on open browsing and social media. If those are part of your daily phone habit while abroad, the Smart SIM will feel limiting rather than useful. If you can live without them for the sake of not paying daily roaming fees, and if the idea of a quiet UK backup for signal blackspots appeals to you, this is a sensible, cheap, and genuinely useful second SIM.
