Sky has added free global roaming in 120 destinations for its longest-standing customers. From 20 July 2026, any Sky VIP Diamond customer on Sky Mobile can use their UK data, calls and texts abroad at no extra cost, on any data plan. The catch is the eligibility bar: you have to have been a Sky customer for more than 15 years.
What Sky has launched
Diamond is the top tier of Sky VIP, Sky's loyalty scheme, and it is reserved for customers who have been with Sky for over 15 years. Reaching that tier now unlocks free roaming across 120 destinations, including the EU and EEA, the USA, Australia and dozens of others outside Europe.
The benefit works the same way as roaming at home. Eligible customers use their existing UK data, minutes and texts while abroad, with nothing extra to pay. It applies to both current Sky Mobile customers and Diamond VIPs who newly join Sky Mobile, and it works with every data plan rather than being limited to premium tariffs.
There is nothing to install or set up. The benefit activates automatically once an eligible customer uses 10MB of data, or makes a call or sends a text to a UK number, while in one of the 120 destinations. Roaming data is subject to a 25GB fair usage limit per bill cycle.
Who qualifies and what it is worth
The 15-year requirement is the main limit. This is a reward for loyalty rather than a feature available to every Sky Mobile customer, so most people on the network will not be eligible yet.
For those who do qualify, Sky puts the saving in context. Based on a five-day trip, Sky says free global roaming is around £30 cheaper than an EE customer using EE's Zone 1 Pass, and up to £40 cheaper than a Vodafone customer using Vodafone's Global Roam or Zone D passes. Checked against the networks' own published rates, EE's Rest of World Zone 1 Pass costs £6 a day and covers over 30 destinations, while Vodafone's Zone C daily charge runs from £6 to £6.85. Sky's comparison assumes standard-plan customers, and some higher-tier EE and Vodafone plans include roaming already.
Diamond VIPs who do not currently have Sky Mobile can move their number across by texting PAC to 65075 to request a switching code. As a joining incentive, Sky is offering them an unlimited data plan on a new SIM for £10 a month on a 12-month contract, half the standard £20 a month price for new customers.
How this compares across the market
Free roaming as standard is increasingly rare, and where it exists it is usually tied to a network's most expensive plans. On EE it comes with Full Works plans, on Three with Complete plans, on Vodafone with Premier plans and on O2 with Ultimate plans. Most budget and mid-range tariffs across the market charge for roaming separately or exclude it entirely.
Sky's version is unusual because it is not tied to a specific tariff. A Diamond VIP gets it on any Sky Mobile data plan, including cheaper ones. The trade-off is that the qualifying condition is loyalty length rather than spend, so it is not something a new customer can simply buy into.
Most smaller networks, including Giffgaff, SMARTY, Voxi, iD Mobile, Lebara, Talkmobile, Tesco Mobile and Lyca Mobile, do not include worldwide roaming as standard, though several sell paid add-ons for travel beyond their inclusive zones.
What this means for customers
If you are a long-standing Sky customer, it is worth checking whether you have reached Diamond tier, because the roaming benefit is now one of the more valuable rewards attached to it. If you have, and you travel outside the EU with any regularity, the free roaming could easily outweigh what you would pay on a rival network's daily pass. You can weigh it against current Sky Mobile SIM-only deals to see how the standard tariffs stack up.
If you are not a Diamond VIP, this launch does not change much for you directly. Sky Mobile customers below Diamond can still use Roaming Passport Plus, which covers the same 120 destinations for £2 a day. That is competitive against the £6 or more a day EE and Vodafone charge for comparable worldwide destinations, but it is not free. For most people shopping purely on price and flexibility, loyalty perks like this are a poor reason to pick a network, because you cannot access them for well over a decade. It makes more sense to compare current SIM-only deals on their standard terms, roaming charges included, and treat a benefit like this as a bonus if you happen to qualify rather than a reason to sign up. If roaming matters to you and you want to keep your options open, a 30-day SIM-only deal lets you switch as your travel plans change, and moving your number over is straightforward with a PAC code.
