Travel eSIM
Compare travel eSIM plans for Japan, with prices updated daily. We compare plans from Airalo, Breeze, KnowRoaming, and Land&Go by Mozillion, and we are adding more providers. This page includes Japan-only plans plus regional Asia and global plans that cover Japan, so you can pick the option that suits a single-country trip or a multi-stop itinerary.
We may earn a commission if you buy a travel eSIM through our links. This does not affect how deals are ranked.
Features are shown where confirmed by the provider.
Plan prices, data allowances, validity, and features come from retailer feeds and are refreshed daily. Plans are sorted by lowest price by default, and you can sort or filter by data, trip length, coverage type, and provider. We may earn a commission when you buy through our links, but this does not change the order plans appear in.
The guidance below was checked against provider terms and Japanese carrier information in October 2026. You can compare other destinations on our travel eSIM hub.
Airalo charges in US dollars. We show an approximate price in pounds using a daily exchange rate, so the amount on your statement may differ slightly. Your card provider may also add a fee for paying in a foreign currency.
Most travellers overbuy. For a one-week trip with maps, messaging, and social media, 3GB to 5GB is usually enough. Allow 10GB or more if you plan to hotspot a laptop, stream video on the Shinkansen, or share a connection with a travel partner.
Download offline maps for Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto before you fly to reduce mobile-data use. Offline maps do not include live traffic or public transport directions. If you use LINE to message hotels, tour operators, or people you meet, voice and video calls will use far more data than text messages.
For trips of two weeks or longer, or a trip that also takes in South Korea, Taiwan, or elsewhere in Asia, compare the Asia regional plans. The price per GB can work out lower than buying a longer Japan-only plan.
Japan is outside the European roaming zones included in most UK plans, so using your UK SIM there usually means a daily charge or pay-as-you-go rates. Check what your network charges before you travel in our roaming guides.
Japan has four mobile networks: NTT Docomo, KDDI (au), SoftBank, and Rakuten Mobile. Most travel eSIMs run on Docomo, KDDI, or SoftBank.
Coverage on the three main networks used by travel eSIMs is strong across Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Nagoya, Hiroshima, and the main Shinkansen routes between them. Signal can drop in mountain areas, rural coastal towns, and some of the longer Shinkansen tunnels. If you are heading to the Japanese Alps or smaller islands, check which network your plan uses in the provider's terms before you buy.
Tourist SIMs are available from retailers such as JAL ABC and Sakura Mobile, including at Narita and Haneda airports. When checked in September 2026, JAL ABC listed a 7-day unlimited physical prepaid SIM at ¥4,500, or about £21 using the Bank of England exchange rate for 24 September 2026. Buying one after arrival can mean visiting a kiosk or swapping a physical SIM.
A travel eSIM you install before you fly can work as soon as you land and avoids the airport queue. The trade-off is that most do not include a Japanese phone number. That can matter if a restaurant or hotel booking needs to send you an SMS confirmation, but most travellers will not need one.
Buy the plan and install the eSIM profile before you fly, while you are on reliable Wi-Fi, using the QR code or provider app. Check when the plan's validity starts: some plans start when the eSIM first connects in Japan, while others start on installation. Follow the provider's instructions on when to switch the line on.
After landing, turn on the eSIM line, set it as your data line, and turn on data roaming for the eSIM line. Most travel eSIMs will not connect without it. Turn off data roaming on your UK line so your UK network does not charge you for data.
If there is no connection after a minute, switch airplane mode on and off once. You can keep your UK line on for calls and texts on your usual number, but calls and texts received in Japan may still be charged by your UK network.
If you are unsure whether your phone supports eSIM, check our eSIM compatibility guide before buying.
Answers to common questions about using a travel eSIM in Japan.
Yes. Docomo, KDDI, and SoftBank cover the main bullet train routes. Signal can drop briefly in some of the longer tunnels, but it should reconnect automatically.
Yes. Coverage in Japan's major cities is strong on Docomo, KDDI, and SoftBank.
Yes, if you choose a regional Asia plan that covers both. Check the country list before you buy because regional plans do not all cover the same destinations.
Most travel eSIMs are data only and do not include a Japanese number. You can make internet calls with apps such as LINE or WhatsApp, or ask hotels and other businesses to contact you by email instead.
It depends on the plan. Some travel eSIMs allow hotspot and tethering, while others limit or block it. Plans marked "Hotspot allowed" on their tile support it. For other plans, check the provider's terms before you buy if tethering matters for your trip.
