How we compare travel eSIMs for the USA

Plan prices, data allowances, validity, and features come from retailer feeds and are refreshed daily. Plans are sorted by lowest price by default, and you can sort or filter by data, trip length, coverage type, and provider. We may earn a commission when you buy through our links, but this does not change the order plans appear in.

The guidance below was checked against provider terms in October 2026. You can compare other destinations on our travel eSIM hub.

Airalo charges in US dollars. We show an approximate price in pounds using a daily exchange rate, so the amount on your statement may differ slightly. Your card provider may also add a fee for paying in a foreign currency.

How much data do you need for the USA?

For a week-long city break in New York or Las Vegas with maps, messaging, social media, and ride-hailing apps such as Uber and Lyft, 5GB is usually enough. Road trips use more, because navigation runs for hours at a time: allow 10GB to 20GB for two weeks on the road, or more if you plan to hotspot a laptop or stream in the car.

Download offline maps for any national parks or remote areas on your route before you set off. If your trip also takes in Canada or Mexico, the Americas plans on this page cover 25 countries on one eSIM. Check the country list before you buy.

The USA is outside the European roaming zones included in most UK plans, so using your UK SIM there usually means a daily charge or pay as you go rates. Some UK plans include the USA, so check what your network charges before you travel in our roaming guides.

Network coverage in the USA

The USA has three national mobile networks: AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile. Travel eSIMs usually run on AT&T or T-Mobile. You can check which network a plan uses in the plan details on the provider's site.

Coverage is strong in cities and along the main interstate highways. Signal can be weak or missing in national parks such as Yellowstone, Yosemite, Death Valley, and parts of the Grand Canyon, in mountain areas, and on long rural roads in the West. If you are planning a national parks trip, check which network your plan uses before you buy.

Travel eSIM versus a local SIM in the USA

Prepaid SIMs from T-Mobile, AT&T, Verizon, and their budget brands are sold in their own stores and in retailers such as Walmart and Target. You do not usually need ID to buy a prepaid SIM.

A US prepaid plan can be good value for a month or longer, and gives you a US number. For a trip of two or three weeks, a travel eSIM saves a store visit after a long-haul flight and works as soon as you land.

How to activate your eSIM in the USA

Buy the plan and install the eSIM profile before you travel, while you are on reliable Wi-Fi, using the QR code or the provider app. Check when the plan's validity starts: most start when the eSIM first connects in the USA, but some start on install. Follow the provider's instructions on when to switch the line on.

After arriving, turn on the eSIM line, set it as your data line, and turn on data roaming for the eSIM line. Most travel eSIMs will not connect without it. Turn off data roaming on your UK line so your UK network does not charge you for data.

If there is no connection after a minute, switch airplane mode on and off once. You can keep your UK line on for calls and texts on your usual number, but calls and texts received abroad may still be charged by your UK network. If you are not sure your phone supports eSIM, check our eSIM compatibility guide before you buy.

If you are flying into one city and driving to a national park, check your eSIM works in the city first, while you are on reliable signal, rather than waiting until you are in a remote area.

Travel eSIM for the USA FAQ

Answers to common questions about using a travel eSIM in the United States.

Will my eSIM work in national parks?

In visitor centres and some lodges, but often not on trails or remote roads. Parks such as Yellowstone, Yosemite, and Death Valley have large areas with no signal on any network, so download offline maps and park guides before you go.

How much data do I need for a US road trip?

Navigation uses more data than most activities, so plan for 10GB to 20GB for two weeks on the road, and more if you hotspot a laptop or stream in the car.

Can I use one eSIM for the USA and Canada?

Yes, if you choose an Americas or global plan that covers both. Check the country list before you buy, because plans do not all cover the same destinations.

Will my eSIM work for Uber and Lyft?

Yes. Both only need a data connection. Set up your account and payment method before you travel, while you still have your UK number for verification texts.

Do I get a US phone number?

Most travel eSIMs are data only and do not include a US number. Some plans on this page include US minutes and texts, shown in the plan name, so check the plan details if you need to call or text US numbers. Otherwise, keep your UK line on for calls and texts, or use apps such as WhatsApp or FaceTime.
